Introduction: Infant massage has been, for centuries, a tradition for many cultures, but a relatively new technique in the West, imported from India by Dr. Leboyer, who noted its benefits for children. Touch is the first sense we develop, allows us to connect in life from the intrauterine to old age. It is one of the most advanced forms of communication and one of the most powerful. Is made in the skin. Through the massage and skin can make an important stimulus for the baby.
Aimed: Research objective is to determine the effect of massage in the newborn and children, both premature infants and full term, with or without patologies, to receive the massage.
Methods: For the development of the research was conducted the next question, What are the effects of massage on newborn and infant?. After that the study of a group of newborns with or without patologies . Were about 200 newborns and infants were investigated. The study lasted about two years, and all underwent massage with the same frequency.
Results: The results obtained were a better weight gain, better development, neurosensory prolonged periods of alert, increased vagal tone and gastric motility, analgesic effects. Also, better organization of sleep, decrease stress hormones, fewer days of hospitalization and showed a positive interaction with his mother.
Conclusions: We found that infant massage has many benefits for the newborn. Also for mother and their interaction with newborn, especially the attachment, but there are special situations in which it was not effective. This ultimately depends on the newborn.
